EFL teachers hoping to teach English in Mexico can find jobs in major cities, as well as in small cities. CDMX provides the most opportunity, although there areplenty of ESL jobs in Guadalajara, Monterrey, Riviera Maya and Los Cabos due to the booming tourism industry. TESOL/TEFL certification is strongly preferred in order to teach in Mexico. Qualified teachers with two or more years of experience can apply to teach in Private Bilingual schools, international schools within the International Baccalaureate Program, largely concentrated in CDMX. Teachers of all levels, from nursery to high school, are encouraged to apply for these jobs, which offer high salaries by Mexican standards in addition to competitive benefits.

Hiring Time for English Teachers

 

International schools usually begin the hiring process around June/July or for theschool year beginning in August. They can also have hiring processes in November or December to start right after winter break. Universities, have similar processes.

 

Prerequisites for Teaching in Mexico

 

Language schools strongly prefer TESOL/TEFL-certified teachers. If you are looking for a paid English teaching job in Mexico, you should not go without a TESOL/TEFL certificate in your pocket. Prior teaching experience is preferred, but not always required

 

Contract Length

 

Contracts differ from six months to 1 year. It is up to the institution and the teacher agreement.

ISSSTE (Institute for Social Security and Services for State Workers): Offers healthcare benefits to government employees and their families.

 

Private Health Care:

Private hospitals and clinics: These offer a wider range of specialized services and often shorter waiting times than public facilities.

Private health insurance: Many Mexicans opt for private health insurance to access private healthcare services and avoid long wait times in the public system.

 

Pharmacies

 

Pharmacies, known as "farmacias," are widely available throughout Mexico, including Monterrey. You'll find both large chain pharmacies and smaller independent ones.

 

Prescription medications: In Mexico, you can purchase many medications over-the-counter without a prescription. However, antibiotics and certain controlled substances require a doctor's prescription.

 

Over-the-counter medications: Pharmacies stock a wide range of over-the-countermedications for common ailments like pain, fever, allergies, and digestive issues.

 

Generic vs. brand-name medications: Pharmacists will usually ask if you prefer ageneric or brand-name medication. Generic medications are typically more affordable.

 

Important to know:

"Consultorio médico" or "consultorio adjunto": Many pharmacies have an adjacent doctor's office where you can consult a doctor for minor ailments and get aprescription if needed.

 

"Farmacia de turno" or "farmacia 24 horas": Some pharmacies operate 24 hoursa day or have extended hours. These are usually indicated by signs saying "de turno" or "24 horas."

 

Language: If you don't speak Spanish, it's helpful to have a translation app or phrasebook handy when visiting a pharmacy or doctor's office.

Remember: If you have a serious medical emergency, dial 911 for immediate assistance. For non-emergencies, consider consulting a doctor at a pharmacy's adjacent clinic or seeking treatment at a private hospital or clinic if you have private health insurance.
